Precision BioLogic expanding its R&D roster

Successful companies focus on operations today while keeping an eye on opportunities for tomorrow. Certainly that's the approach taken by Precision BioLogic Inc.

"We want to simplify our customers' lives," explains Chair and CEO Michael Scott. "We're dedicated to finding solutions for lab managers and technologists - with a focus on the specialty coagulation field. We've developed a range of products for the critical lab, all aimed to give better results, more reliably, faster."

The dedication has paid off. The Dartmouth-based company has grown significantly over the past 13 years. Today, the firm - which has an internal quality system registered to the ISO 13485 standard for medical device companies - employs 35 people and sells its products throughout Canada, the US, the UK and Europe.

It was with an eye on tomorrow, however, that Precision BioLogic discussed its requirements - and a possible opportunity - with SmartBusiness. SmartBusiness, an initiative of the Greater Halifax Partnership, is currently visiting business owners and senior business representatives to gather information on the challenges, needs, and opportunities facing the business community in Greater Halifax. These businesses operate in all sectors and come in all sizes.

"Precision BioLogic expressed interest in increasing the pace of its expansion. We were glad to help facilitate that interest," says SmartBusiness Director, Brad Smith.

The company then turned to the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to add another R&D employee to its roster under the Innovation Skills Development Initiative.

"ACOA is a strong supporter of the life sciences sector, making significant investments in both private businesses and institutional research and development," says Mr. Scott. "Precision BioLogic has worked with the Agency to undertake marketing, training, and product development activities."

Brad Smith of the Greater Halifax Partnership notes that helping Precision BioLogic attain its expansion plans by linking it with government support helps more than just a single company. "It results in increasing the number of qualified science and technology professionals working in Atlantic Canada. Those professionals, in turn, help businesses like Precision BioLogic grow and expand."
