Medavie Blue Cross - Quality Service, Core Values and SmartBusiness
Medavie Blue Cross is an Atlantic Canadian company – with a customer base that is growing across the country and a reputation for excellence that is building around the world.
The 62-year-old firm recently expanded into Ontario and Quebec, and with that expansion came a name change. Medavie was added to highlight – in a unique combination of French and English – the company’s commitment to quality health care and quality of life. “As a leading provider of individual and group health, travel, life and disability benefits, the new name is a great representation of the products we sell,” says Paul Dowie, Chief Executive in Nova Scotia.
It also underscores the company’s core values: integrity, excellence in customer service, continuous learning and growth. “We contribute to the well being of our communities and our society,” says Mr. Dowie. “Medavie Blue Cross is an organization our employees are proud of and proud to work for.”
Giving back is central to the values on which Medavie Blue Cross is founded. Every year, for example, employees give thousands of hours of personal and company time to support events that are of special importance to them. And every year the company contributes directly – and significantly – to the economy of the four Atlantic Provinces. The company administers claims in excess of $2 billion every year and has total assets of more than $200 million.
That contribution is growing along with the company – and a key reason why Medavie understands the value of SmartBusiness. “We are able to use information from
SmartBusiness – valuable information – to help our company expand,” says Dowie. “The Greater Halifax Partnership, through SmartBusiness, is also working with us to identify and remove barriers to growth. The goal is to stay in Atlantic Canada and grow the business from here across the country – and beyond.”
In particular, the SmartBusiness initiative will be an important resource for Medavie in accessing labour demand information. “As we grow and identify specialty skill sets we will require, this knowledge is critical,” says Dowie. “Already the Partnership has enhanced our understanding of the labour demand issues that will be facing our community and how it might affect us.”
But Medavie’s commitment to SmartBusiness goes well beyond their own walls. “One of the reasons Medavie participated so actively in SmartBusiness was to help others in the community succeed as well. They recognize the importance of a vibrant business community and prosperous economy,” says Stephen Dempsey, President and CEO of the Greater Halifax Partnership.
After all, that’s what SmartBusiness is all about.
