How do I hire an immigrant?

Immigrant Male

All immigrants and sponsored refugees are permanent residents and will have a “PR” card to demonstrate that status.

A permanent resident is legally entitled to work in Canada, with the same rights and obligations as a Canadian citizen. There is no special process required to hire a permanent resident.

How to hire a Temporary Foreign Worker

Every year, Canadian employers bring over 90,000 foreign workers to Canada to work temporarily to help address skill shortages and workforce needs.

Generally there are four steps involved in hiring a temporary foreign worker from outside Canada. Learn more about the process of hiring Foreign Workers by visiting the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

How can I find skilled immigrants?

There are a variety of ways of reaching skilled immigrants already living in Nova Scotia:

  • Expand your methods of recruitment. Post your job openings with organizations that work with immigrants or have a multi-cultural and diversity-friendly focus.
  • Ensure that your planning and sourcing strategies reach skilled immigrant communities.
  • Examine your hiring processes carefully to make sure that you are not inadvertently screening out candidates with international education and experience.
  • Contact the Employment Engager and Liaison through the Immigrant Settlement & Integration Services (formerly MISA and HILC). The Work in Nova Scotia (WINS) Program has a large database of immigrants with a wide variety of skills who are looking for work in Nova Scotia. The Employment Engager and Liaison is in touch with over 900 newcomer job seekers with a variety of skills and competencies.
  • Check out the Skilled Worker and International Graduate streams of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program.

Please contact Margie Casallas, Coordinator of the Partnership’s Employer Support Program at greaterhalifax.com if you have any questions about the program, or the immigration process.
