Halifax: A University City
Greater Halifax is home to six highly regarded universities, each specializing in various programs and degrees. These institutions currently have 5,491 graduate students and 26,071 undergraduate students enrolled. With such a large student population, Halifax becomes home to many different people from around the world.
In fact, the "Nova Scotia: Canada's University Capital" campaign was recently launched to showcase the innovative, unique and globally-renowned universities located across the province.
The post-secondary opportunities available in Halifax make the city a great place to grow, learn, and make friends. According to the Canadian Occupational Projection System, 60 percent of job growth in Nova Scotia will be tailored for post-secondary graduates. Private Colleges
Nova Scotia’s Private Colleges offer a wide variety of occupational programs that specifically meet the needs of business and industry. The Private Colleges Association of Nova Scotia (PCANS) represents over 14 leading colleges in the Halifax area, who are registered with the Department of Education.
Private colleges provide quality, industry-approved programs. Last year, our 20 member colleges collectively trained over 3,000 students in the province of Nova Scotia. This number represents approximately 70% of the students attending private colleges in the province today.

Primary & Secondary Education
The Halifax Regional School Board, Nova Scotia’s largest school board, accounts for 38% of the province's school age population. There are 52,107 public school students in Greater Halifax enrolled in 137 primary and secondary schools in 2009. The area also has a large number of students taking French courses and enrolled in French immersion.
In addition, a number of private schools offer high quality and specialized educational options at the elementary and secondary level.
Halifax Regional Library System
The Halifax Regional Library is the life-long learning centre of the community and the place people turn to for the discovery of ideas, the joy of reading, and the power of information.
The Halifax Regional Library system is comprised of 14 branch libraries, two mobile libraries, Books-by-Mail, Home Delivery services, and an e-branch. Its collection consists of many items including books, magazines, videos, compact discs, DVDs, and cassettes.
