Communities in Halifax

The entire region of Halifax can be formally referred to as Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). This area is comprised of 196 neighbouring communities that are all within a short distance of each other, surrounding a variety of different areas, coastal scenery, and charming towns.  To name a few:

Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia and the economic hub of Atlantic Canada  With the world’s second largest natural harbour in the world, the Halifax Port is a Gateway to the rest of the world. Halifax has the feel of a big city – but with a small town charm. The downtown area is all within walking distance.

Halifax’s neighbouring communities are all within a short bus ride to each other.  Just over the MacKay and MacDonald bridges, and linked by the oldest continuously operating salt water ferry service in North America you will find Dartmouth, known as the City of Lakes.  Dartmouth is nicknamed the City of Lakes, boasting 23 lakes within its boundaries.

Lying on the northwestern arm of the Halifax Harbour, you will find the town of Bedford. A suburb community just a short commute downtown, acts as a bedroom community to many professionals who work in Halifax.

Sackville is one of the fastest growing communities in Nova Scotia.  While Lower Sackville is almost fully developed residentially, it has a mix of business, residential and park areas, whereas the outskirts of Sackville (Middle and Upper) are continuing to increase with residential homes.

Hammonds Plains also serves as a dormitory area for Halifax commuters. The neighborhood offers seclusion from the city; familiarity of country living, and still all the amenities near by.  Many homes are spread out and lie on unserviced lots surrounded by trees for privacy.

Eastern Passage is located on the southeastern edge of Halifax Harbour, in Dartmouth. This area is largely used by small recreational boats and fishing vessels. The waterfront shows evidence of its historical connection as it is blanketed with small wharf and fishing boats.
