Education

Greater Halifax offers one of the highest quality education systems in North America and a wide range of educational opportunities for everyone.

Primary and Secondary Education
The Halifax Regional School Board, Nova Scotia’s largest school board, accounts for 38% of the province's school age population. There are 54,389 public school students in Greater Halifax enrolled in 140 primary and secondary schools. The area also has a large number of students taking French courses and enrolled in French immersion.

In addition, a number of private schools offer high quality and specialized educational options at the elementary and secondary level.

Halifax Regional Library System

The Halifax Regional Library is the life-long learning centre of the community and the place people turn to for the discovery of ideas, the joy of reading, and the power of information.

The Halifax Regional Library system is comprised of 14 branch libraries, two mobile libraries, Books-by-Mail and Home Delivery services, and e-branch. Its collection consists of more than 1,164,578 items including books, magazines, videos, compact discs, DVDs, and cassettes.

Post-Secondary Education
Greater Halifax is home to six highly regarded universities. Each one offers a range of traditional and innovative programs including commerce, arts and social sciences; sciences; dentistry; medicine; fine arts; journalism; health sciences; theology; and education. Our post-secondary institutions currently have 5,262 graduate students and 25,534 undergraduate students enrolled.

The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) has three campuses in Greater Halifax and offers training to more than 10,000 full and part-time students in areas such as applied arts, apprenticeship trades, business, health, human services, technical, and technology fields.

Nova Scotia’s Private Colleges offer a wide variety of occupational programs that specifically meet the needs of business and industry. The Private Colleges Association of Nova Scotia (PCANS) represents over 14 leading colleges in the Halifax area, who are registered with the Department of Education.

Private colleges provide quality, industry-approved programs. Last year, our 20 member colleges collectively trained over 3,000 students in the province of Nova Scotia. This number represents approximately 70% of the students attending private colleges in the province today.
