Canadian icon chooses Halifax

Canadian-TireSince first moving cargo through Halifax in 2005, Canadian Tire has made the Halifax Gateway an integral part of the company’s supply chain.

“Halifax is a competitive advantage,” says Jody Fitzpatrick, Associate VP of international transportation and operations support, Canadian Tire Corporation. “The work force is very stable, and goods flow seamlessly.”

Prior to the change, all of the company’s cargo went through Vancouver – even the 11% destined for Atlantic Canada.

The company has found many advantages to the Halifax Gateway:
•    lower costs from reduced one-way shipping
•    great reliability and service
•    available shipping capacity

Sound economics and ease of use

“Halifax is a very close-knit community. It’s easy to get things done and find the services we need,” Jody adds.

Canadian Tire Corporation now moves 10% of its total offshore shipments through Halifax, using a range of services:
•    the Port of Halifax
•    CN Rail
•    transload facilities and services, including Consolidated FastFrate
•    trucking and the highway system

“Halifax Gateway is incorporated into our business and we don’t see that changing,” concludes Jody.

Service and location creates value

gateway-facilities-logoGateway Facilities’ customers save money thanks to its location in Halifax and unique warehouse.

“We prepare the loads in refrigerated space and then get them to the aircraft in less than two minutes,” says Doug McRae, CEO, Gateway Facilities. “The next closest airport where wide-bodied planes can park next to the building is Miami or Los Angeles.”

The company is located at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, providing:
•    easy access to Europe from the closest airport in North America
•    trucking via a well-developed highway system
•    close proximity to seafood sources

The new warehouse with temperature-controlled space is a joint venture with the airport and a great example of how the Halifax Gateway works.

“Collaboration with the airport was critical to create this unique asset,” says Doug.

Expand your markets

The constant low temperatures and reduced travel time:
•    add value by maintaining the quality of seafood and other perishables
•    extend the distance you can ship sensitive products like live lobster
•    save costs on fuel and shipping
•    reduce potential product loss

As a result, customers have expanded market opportunities – they can send a quality product further.
