Halifax Harbour Bridges
The growing number of Halifax Harbour bridge crossings indicates the strong increase in economic development in the local area. It also indicates a rising population in the immediate Halifax region and an expanding number of tourists visiting the Greater Halifax area each year.
In 2009, there were over 33 million crossings on both bridges - that's 600,000 more than in 2008. This increase is even more significant in a year when the country was in a recession and is an indication that the Halifax economy continued to thrive.
Every year, both harbour bridges undergo a rigorous inspection to accommodate this increase in traffic. The bridges are user-pay facilities and all the toll dollars remain at the bridges to execute a significant work plan to ensure they remain two of the best maintained pieces of infrastructure in the province.
