The Greater Halifax area has an exceptionally high level of labour force participation. In May 2010, Greater Halifax’s level of participation was 71.9%. This rate is  4.6 percentage points above the national average, and one of the top five highest rates in the country.

Unemployment
The unemployment rate for Greater Halifax stands at 5.8% for April 2010. This rate is 2.3 percentage points below the national average.

Employment
Despite job cuts throughout the country, employment in April 2010 was at a record high of 219,800, the number of people employed in Greater Halifax continues to grow and has created nearly 3500 positions since May 2009(216,400)

Employment by Profession
Greater Halifax possesses a diversified and highly skilled workforce. In 2006, 63,100 people in Greater Halifax worked in management, business, finance, and administration-related jobs while 57,400 worked in sales and service positions.
