Halifax-Dartmouth Bridges

The growing number of Halifax Harbour bridge crossings indicates the strong increase in economic development in the local area. It also indicates a rising population in the immediate Halifax region and an expanding number of tourists visiting the Greater Halifax area each year. Both harbour bridges have undergone substantial upgrades in the past two years to accommodate this increase in traffic, including the addition of a reversible third lane and a bike lane on the Macdonald Bridge.

Saturday, April 2, 2005 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge known to Haligonians as the ‘Old Bridge’. Exactly 50 years before on April 2, 1955 the Macdonald Bridge first opened to the public, connecting Dartmouth with Halifax. Approximately 9,212 vehicles crossed the bridge on opening day. Now, the bridge carries approximately 40,000 vehicles daily.
