Best Practices in Employee Recruitment and Retention
The Greater Halifax Partnership has visited over 1,200 businesses, including more than 260 manufacturers in Greater Halifax through its Business Retention and Expansion initiative, SmartBusiness. These consultations have shown that some sectors face special difficulties. Manufacturing is one of them.

Manufacturing is an important contributor to the Nova Scotia economy.  Manufacturing jobs are high-quality jobs that pay 22 per cent more than the average hourly wage. 95 percent of manufacturing jobs are full-time. For this reason, it is good policy to encourage continued growth in this important sector.

Given that manufacturing is one sector in which employers are experiencing challenges finding – and keeping – skilled staff, the Partnership researched local, national, and international HR best practices in employee recruitment and retention. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Nova Scotia also collaborated on the project. Resulting from this research – a working guide and an easy-to-use assessment tool that manufacturers can use to pinpoint problems and then implement practical solutions for their own work places.

Contact Robyn Webb at rwebb@greaterhalifax.com today for more information on keeping and attracting staff.

The Partnership also works to strengthen our local workforce by looking to match identified labour force needs with available pools of skilled labour, and by assisting particular individuals transition successfully into the workplace.

"Many research studies have proven that money is a short-term incentive. The best way to keep good employees is to empower them and give them autonomy in their responsibilities."
