Halifax Gateway
Gateway to the world Halifax is an international gateway to the world – and we are proud to welcome the world to our doorstep. By ground, by air, and by sea. The Halifax Gateway has a total economic impact of over $3 billion a year employing over 23,500 people in Nova Scotia. Over $200 million in private investment has been committed in Halifax recently - Macquarie Infrastructure Partners, Ceres/NYK, Consolidated Fastfrate, CN and Armour Transportation Systems to name a few.
The Halifax Gateway Council (HGC) released its new five-year strategic plan in February, 2010. HGC's 2010—2015: Strategic Plan: Building the Halifax Gateway focuses on realizing the vision of Halifax becoming the preferred eastern gateway for North America and the world, driving economic growth in Atlantic Canada and Canada as a whole. Halifax Gateway: Open to the World Halifax is an ideal destination, and important stop en route, for goods and people from around the world. Here’s what makes Halifax a vital gateway in international transportation:
Port of Halifax - The Port of Halifax is Canada’s third largest container port
- The fastest route to North America’s heartland
- One full day nearer by sea to Southeast Asia (via the Suez Canal) than any other North American East Coast container port
- Close to all major trade routes worldwide – direct service to/from Europe, Mediterranean, Caribbean, South America, and Asia (via both the Panama and Suez routings)
- Direct access to 40% of the North American population
- Seamless intermodal links – rail and truck
- No congestion and available capacity at both container terminals and on-dock rail
- Minimal container dwell and fast connections to inland markets
- Stable labour force
- $100 million in capital investments have been made by the Port over the past five years, while port operators and private companies have invested $250 million in cargo related infrastructure improvements

Rail and trucking - Halifax is a major origin and destination point in Atlantic Canada for both rail and trucking
- We offer a seamless intermodal connection from ship to the CN line into the heart of North America. This CN rail link makes Halifax an attractive entry point to the whole continent.
- CN and the Port of Halifax provide the most efficient ship-to-rail connections between ports in India, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Caribbean and key North American markets. With CN's Precision Railroading, every shipment is planned to optimize fuel efficiency.
- It is estimated that Halifax Gateway related rail services produces $170 million in economic output, while long-haul and regional trucking services generate $160 million in economic impact annually.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport - Halifax Stanfield International Airport is one of Canada’s fastest growing airports.
- Halifax Stanfield International Airport makes a significant contribution to both Halifax and the province. With a total economic impact of $1.2 billion, the airport provides passengers and cargo clients with access to markets across the country and the world.
- Halifax Stanfield International Airport has more flights to more destinations than any other airport in Atlantic Canada, and offers seamless US customs preclearance for passengers.
- The Halifax Stanfield International Airport also has the largest air cargo facilities in Atlantic Canada with the widest range of prices and frequencies.
- As Atlantic Canada’s Air Gateway, HSIA lands over 60% of Atlantic Canada’s commercial air cargo
- Since 2000, over 72% of the capital improvements in Atlantic Canadian airports have been made by HSIA – more than $265 million
- The Airport plays a key role in the ability of the province to retain and attract new business, with 12,000 direct and spin-off jobs attributable to Airport activity
- Halifax Stanfield International Airport (HSIA) and Gateway Facilities Inc. have broken ground on a new 40,000 square foot multi-tenant cargo facility next door to Aerotech Park. The $12 million joint project will see HSIA develop the site in the Airport’s airside subdivision, bringing it up to grade and building an aircraft apron area.
