A cost-free way to help students

Computers_for_Schools_logoOne of Nova Scotia’s best kept secrets as well as one of its great success stories is the Computers for Schools (CFS) Program.  This is a program I have always supported and one the Partnership is participating in to increase access to technology in local schools.

Originating in this province in 1993, under the auspices of NovaKnowledge, Telephone Pioneers and the Department of Education this program, now operating in all provinces and territories, has provided over one million used but still useable computers to schools in Canada.   The national program is now under the wing of Industry Canada.

At present the primary sources of the used computers are the Federal and Provincial Governments which require that all surplus equipment be offered first to the CFS program.  As in other Provinces, the Nova Scotia CFS Program operates workshops which refurbish the equipment for distribution to schools as well as public libraries, CAP Sites, adult literacy programs and other eligible not-for-profit organizations.   In Nova Scotia over 68,000 computers have been made available to schools at no cost.

While the program has had support from some businesses, it has only managed to develop ongoing arrangements with a few and is hoping to expand this significant source. I encourage members of our local business community to consider donating to this important program.

The CFS NS minimum standard is a P4, 2.4 ghz CPU,  15” LCD Monitors. They accept keyboards, mice, laser printers, etc.  A complete list of what they are seeking can be seen on their website.  CFS NS will arrange with companies to pick up any equipment meeting its minimum standards at no cost to you and will offer you a tax receipt for your donation which will be acknowledged by CFS on its Website and in its newsletter.

To find out more about the program, to arrange to visit the workshop, or to have a program representative meet with you, call 902-424-3596.
