I
believe that the single most important Economic Development initiative
currently before us is the creation of our city’s five-year Economic
Strategy. The re-development of HRM’s Economic Strategy and its
implementation will profoundly, positively and profitably transform the
economy of Atlantic Canada’s major economic hub with benefits for the
entire region.
Our current plan (Strategies for Success-2005-2010)
expired last year. All three levels of government and the private
sector agreed that a renewed Economic Strategy for 2011-2016 was immediately required to lift our city to the next level of economic
development and growth.
The Greater Halifax Partnership has led this review and renewal process working
in partnership with the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, HRM, the Mayor’s
Economic Advisory Committee, Nova Scotia Business Inc, ACOA, NSERD and
others to drive this process.
We have drawn on the
insight and expertise of a wide-variety of individuals to ensure the review and
renewal process captures and aligns the expectations of business,
government, and the whole community.
We are now in the final Phase of the project which includes obtaining
approvals of the strategy, launch of the strategy and agreement for
ongoing implementation and engagement.
We will be presenting Halifax's new economic strategy - a GREATER Halifax: the 2011-2016 Economic Strategy for Halifax - to HRM Regional Council on March 22, 2011 for endorsement.
This strategy is the result of more than 3,000 hours of volunteer time
from representatives of small, medium and large business, non-profit and
community leaders. These individuals shared a deep commitment to growing our city by volunteering their valuable time to take part in numerous meetings, consultations and action planning teams. I thank everyone who has contributed thus far and encourage others to share their views by signing-on to our forum.
This site acts as a repository of information about the project
including an overview, timelines, the draft consultation materials and
reports, and the strategy evolution with a means to review and provide
input.
I hope you will agree that helping to shape and deliver a
new five-year economic strategy for our region is a valuable use of
your time. Your contribution will help to ensure that the strategy reflects the
true needs and interests of all.
We are truly planning for prosperity - together.
Sincerely,
Paul Kent
President and CEO
