How do I hire an immigrant?
Most immigrants and refugees are “permanent residents” and will have a “PR” card to demonstrate that status. A permanent resident is legally entitled to work in Canada, with the same rights and obligations as a Canadian citizen. There is no special process required to hire a permanent resident.

How can I find skilled immigrants?
There are a variety of ways of reaching skilled immigrants already living in Nova Scotia:
- Expand your methods of recruitment. Post your job openings with organizations that work with immigrants or have a multi-cultural and diversity-friendly focus.
- Ensure that your planning and sourcing strategies reach skilled immigrant communities.
- Examine your hiring processes carefully to make sure that you are not inadvertently screening out candidates with international education and experience.
- Contact an Employment Specialist through the Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre and Metropolitan Immigrant Settlement Association’s Work in Nova Scotia (WINS) Program. WINS has a large database of immigrants with a wide variety of skills who are looking for work in Nova Scotia. Employment Specialists are in touch with over 700 newcomer job seekers with a variety of skills and competencies.
